In 1972, with thirteen of his most dedicated Black Belts, Ernie founded the American Karate System. Those head instructors, with Mr. Lieb, started a revolution in the Karate world of America. For if you look around you today, you will find over 75% of all Karate schools using the word "American." Some even imitate Lieb's style by using his ideas, style's name and techniques, and calling themselves American Karate Systems. One can suppose that "imitation is the greatest form of flattery." But let it be clear, Mr. Lieb's American Karate System is the only Karate organization recognized in representing American karate. This [fact] has been recorded in the Book of "Who's Who In the Martial Arts," as well as in dozens of Karate Magazine articles which go back to the 60's and 70's, and also recorded at all major Karate Tournaments and events. So anyone not affiliated with the original American Karate System cannot be a representative of his system. In 1978 and 1979, Major Mike Sullenger and Sgt. Robert Debelak served in our military in Germany where they started teaching our A.K.S. style of Karate. With time, and their ability to win events all over Germany and several foreign countries, they established a respected name and reputation for our style there. This includes having Mr. Lieb's beloved A.K.S. become recognized in Germany, Mr. Lieb's native country. Later, Herr Andreas Modl, current director of the A.K.S. in Germany, went a step further. He had the American Karate System recognized and accepted as a member of the German D.K.V. They are the largest Karate organization in Germany with 130,000 + members. In 2004, the European and World Karate Associations also accepted the A.K.S. as a full fledged member. It is the only style of American Karate that has been accepted and has received this recognition. The books were then closed by these Karate organizations. Thus, closing the doors for anyone else being able to represent American Karate in Germany or Europe. This important recognition assured Ernest H. Lieb as founder of his style. A place in history alongside all of the major founders of styles of Karate in the Martial Arts World such as the founders of Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Shito Ryu, Chi Do Kwan, Chung Do Kwan, Moo Duk Kwan, and many others. Now that our foundation and history have been recognized throughout the world, remember that without the dedicated instructors and students within the A.K.S., this wonderful event would never have happened.
I thank all of you for your support of my dream. |

Ethan David Galicic II and his sister Savannah Lee Galicic qualified and competed in the 2016 USA-NKF National Championship which was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 14-17, 2016. There were over 1,400 competitors from across the US to compete over the four days of the tournament. Ethan and Savannah are members of the Mountaineer Karate Club in Lumberport, West Virginia and also study Iaido and Aikido under Sensei Bill King in Weston, West Virginia.
After qualifying for Nationals at the USA National Qualifier held in Charleston, West Virginia, Ethan and Savannah put in many extra hours of practice and preparation for the competition. This included traveling to Pittsburgh, PA and Charleston, WV on several occasions to attend training seminars and practice sessions. Ethan was lucky enough to be selected for individual training with Sensei Mina Yamazaki, the current Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai, Hombu Dojo in Anaheim, California.
Ethan chose to compete in the Advanced Elite Division. Their hard work paid off. Ethan earned a Gold Medal in Advanced Iaido, a Bronze Medal in the Advanced Traditional Weapons Division, and a Bronze Medal in the Advanced Kumite - 45kg Division. Savannah earned a Gold Medal in Iaido and in Weapons. Ethan competed with Chatanyara Kushanku in the Elite Advanced Kata Divison and in Advanced Weapons with Hamahiga No Tonfa. Savannah competed with Heian Yondan in Kata and Sushi No Kon in Weapons.
We are so very proud of Ethan and Savannah for all their hard work and dedication, and for representing the AKS with pride and honor.
Congratulations on jobs well done!
One of the elements we teach our karate students is how to mollify a contentious situation before it becomes physical. There are any number of methods to talk one's way out of a fight. But we train for the times when talk doesn't work and the cretin has his heart set on showing the strength of his bad attitude.
For reasons I don't question, Father Jim Wyse 4th Dan AKS, gave me "Verbal Judo, The Gentle Art of Persuasion," by George Thompson PhD and Jerry B. Jenkins. Mr. Thompson founded the Verbal Judo Institute based on his experiences as a Professor of English and later a field police officer. He held Black Belts in Judo as well as Tae Kwan Do. He used his martial arts training to develop a system for effective communications; at first to assist his fellow officers.
The book teaches how to approach and manage any situation; redirecting conflict to voluntary compliance. Mr. Thompson began teaching his methods to other law enforcement professionals and expanded to business people, education professionals, government employees, social service people and parents. He teaches how to use empathy to manage a contentious encounter. He has five basic principles for verbal judo:
The concepts seem basic enough, but unless we consider how we sound to others, our message gets sidetracked with perceived attitude. This is where Mr. Thompson teaches how to empathize with the person you are trying to communicate with and persuade to your way of thinking.
He makes a number of martial arts references both historic and contemporary as he compares Verbal Judo to Verbal Karate. Judo being persuasive and karate forceful.
One of Mr. Thompson' points I found monumental. He said being in martial arts, you probably don't remember all the times you got punched or kicked, but you never forget when someone was rude or sarcastic to you.
His point was that words can hurt us more, and last longer, than a strong reverse punch. We can all recall hurtful comments or barbs we have endured, none of which persuaded us to embracing an opposing idea.
You may want to consider adding "Verbal Judo" to your list of required reading. It has some valuable insight into teaching us how to get others to see our point of view. If nothing else, it would be great legal support if you ever have to appear before a judge for having resorted to nonverbal karate.

Congratulations to all students who have been promoted this past quarter, and to those we've missed in prior newsletters.
Best wishes in your continued training!
Attention Instructors, if you have students who have been promoted, please send this information so that we may acknowledge their accomplishments.
After the AKS Summer Camp in Muskegon, Michigan this past July, West Virginia had the honor to host Heinrich Reimer, 8th Dan and Christopher Gloede, 1st Dan. I am pretty sure that Heinrich did not care for the 10-hour trip by truck from Muskegon, Michigan to Lumberport, West Virginia, but at least he and Chris had the great company of my buddy Bill Way and myself.
Of course, that may have made the trip seem longer. Heinrich said he was not expecting West Virginia to be so green. After the long drive on Monday, the rest of the week was spent on short trips around the area, great discussions and fellowship, convincing Heinrich that there is also good food outside of Germany, training and a lot of time fixing my reverse punch.
Of course the highlight was when Heinrich and Chris visited our Mountaineer Karate Club in Lumberport, West Virginia. All the students were excited to see him. They had heard his name many times and already knew so much about him. They were not disappointed. After working with the class on basics, Heinrich proceeded to amaze the adults by instructing the kids with the karate game that he invented for children. In just a few minutes, the kids knew what he expected and were having a blast.
We were pleased to have Sensei Eric Swick, head instructor at DragonsDenMMA in Grafton, West Virginia and Michael Gavitt, one his black belts visit us also. He would like for Heinrich to come to his school on his next visit to the U.S.
Here are a few more pictures from Heinrich and Chris's visit:
Now the question on everybody's mind is, "Hey Heinrich and Chris, when are you coming back?"
Soon we hope!

AKS Recognition Page2016 AKS Black Belt of the Year AwardMr. Ethan Galicic, 1st Dan, is this year's recipient of the 2016 AKS Black Belt of the Year Award. Ethan is an instructor with the Mountaineer Karate Club in Lumberport, West Virginia. Ethan was chosen for his hard work and dedication to the AKS, and for helping to bring new life to the Mountaineer Karate Club. Where other classes are losing students to sports and other extracurricular activities, MKC is increasing their student membership. Ethan has played a major part in this with his energy, knowledge, and planning skills. Ethan also has brought new meaning to family values at MKC, as his whole family is very active with their training and their involvement, showing that karate can be a wonderful way of bringing the family together. Ethan began his martial arts training at the age of 13. With a background in Indonesian Pentjak Silat and Arnis, he brings additional knowledge and diversity to class. He always plans well for class with good ideas that he has researched to help entice students of all ages to learn, as well as raising the sparring skills of the students by several levels. Ethan and his family also study Aikido and Iaido with Sensei Bill King once or twice a week. Ethan is always first to arrive and last to leave, willing to do whatever is needed of him. He has been very instrumental in preparing students for tournaments, working with the students and their parents to know what to expect, what is required, and what they can do to help. Ethan had the honor of being presented his award by our visiting guest from Germany, Heinrich Reimer, 8th Dan Wado-Ryu, AKS. Ethan is most deserving of this award, and we are very proud to have him as a member of the AKS. Sandra K. Gore, 3rd Dan AKS 2016 Competitor of the YearEthan David Galicic II is this year's recipient of the 2016 AKS Competitor of the Year Award. Young Ethan is the student instructor with the Mountaineer Karate Club in Lumberport, West Virginia. In addition to his school work, Ethan puts in several hours of training, reading, and research every day. This is in addition to his martial arts classes which he has 3 to 4 times a week. Ethan also studies Iaido and Aikido under Sensei Bill King. Ethan and his sister, Savannah, are the first two students from the Mountaineer Karate Club to qualify and compete in the USA-NKF Nationals, which took place this year in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There were over 1,400 competitors from all across the United States to compete over the four days of the tournament. Ethan earned a Gold Medal in Advanced Iaido, a Bronze medal in the Advanced Traditional Weapons Division, and a Bronze Medal in the Advanced Kumite - 45kg Division. In addition to Nationals, Ethan placed 1st in the Black Belt Division in Weapons and Kata, and 2nd Place in Kumite and Ippon Kumite at the Rumble on the River III Tournament, a Gold Medal in Iaido at the USA National Qualifier, a Bronze Medal in Weapons at the USA Martial Arts Federation National Championships, as well as 2nd place in Kata and 3rd place in Kumite at the Mon Valley Karate/Tae Kwon Do Championships. Ethan has the spirit of a true martial artist; he displays humility with every win and accepts every loss as a learning experience. He has enjoyed making many new friends from other schools at these events. We could not be more proud of this young man and consider ourselves extremely lucky to have him as a member. E. Jude Gore, 6th Dan AKS Please take a moment to view our website and visit the A.K.S. Recognitions page.
